Review: Dogan Food Court (Jalan Batu Kawah, Kuching)

There's a new food court in town and it's right behind Big Mouth on the way to MJC.

My favorite pizza has a stall there so you definitely need to give it a go.

PIZZA TALK! I previously blogged about them when I first discovered them at Da Light where they were known as Tom's Pizza. I'm glad of the change of names cos I always have to clarify which Toms I'm talking about and now I don't.

I had black bean soup with rice. It was decent but nothing mindblowing. My boyfriend got their curry instead and it was not the kind I like. It was just so-so, I wouldn't go there for curry is all I'm saying.

Oh but there's a stall selling dumplings and it was so good. I hate people who overstuff or basically have shitty skin. This was smooth and very agreeable in my mouth.

Open every day from 6:30AM - 12AM

Review: The Pallets (Jalan Mendu, Kuching)

A newly opened Western & Malaysian Restaurant at a carwash most Kuchingites refer to as Lucky Number.

You can find an assortment of pastas, steaks and also local favorites on the menu and I have to say, I loved the mushroom soup!

It's not overly sticky or runny, but milky and tasty instead. Very different from anything I've ever tasted in Kuching. The garlic bread that came with was so good I was tempted to order a basket but refrained as my waistline has been expanding and we ordered mains.

Mine is a beef burger with unsalted fries and a salad. Honestly though, if I'm paying more than RM5 for a burger, I expect high quality ingredients. What I got was a fattened Ramlee burger, drowned in cheap chili sauce with two slices of cucumber and cheese. The buns were the sweet roadside stall kinds rather than quality fluffy white buns.

My boyfriend ordered a chicken chop and it tasted like it was marinated with maggi sauce and some white pepper. Although he went for the mushroom sauce, what arrived tasted suspiciously like black pepper. It came with a salad, fries and two hotdogs. The kind that not even kids would eat.

Honestly, I would return but only for the mushroom soup which I highly recommend. Other than that, good luck.

Review: 万香生肉面 Wan Xiang Noodles (Icom Square, Kuching)

Even though Sabah is practically our neighbour, there has only been one notable Sheng Rou Mian which was previously at Pending and has now moved to Premier 101. But today's post is about a franchise of the deliciously famous Sabah noodles: Wan Xiang Noodles.

It has been opened in Kuching for about a month now and I've been there thrice without any intention of slowing down because it is THAT good. They should make me their ambassador because I keep bringing new people there. But no worries, even at full house, it should only take you 15-20 mins tops to get a seat, place an order and if you're lucky, get your food because they are fast. Like supersonic fast. Grade A service and speed! BUT! Their chopsticks and cutlery are ALWAYS greasy and oily so be prepared with tissues to give them a nice wipe down.

The noodles are never overcooked but unfortunately, they lack that same consistency for their pork liver. I love pork liver because my mom used to make me eat tons of it for medical reasons and I've grown a fondness for them and the perfect pork liver is just cooked so it retains that juicy and tender crunch. Overcook it and all you're left with are pointy little triangles that will poke the insides of your mouth.

I did not detect any excessive use of MSG but a few people have mentioned how oily it is. I'm adamant that it's not though so you'll have to go and try it out for yourself. Just a word of warning to those with sensitive Ramsey Gordon tongues, the soya sauce is a little on the bitter side rather than sweet which I think complements it nicely.

event: OPPO R9s

I got to play with the OPPO R9s yesterday and now I'm pretty much set on upgrading to an OPPO.

Group shot of all the bloggers by Leo Fong of WIXIN Photography
It has everything essential to a photography or filming enthusiast. The picture quality is pretty much dSLR standard and you can manually adjust your settings (shutter speed, aperture & iso!) - something my current phone lacks. It boasts a f/1.7 16MP rear camera which means, your night shots go:

Images for illustration purposes only!
There's this fascinating function in its camera app called Extra HD that will jack up the 16MP to an insane amount of megapixels! And unlike a certain brand which was exposed for trying to pass off dSLR shots as pictures taken with their product, I'll let these photos speak for me.

There was a demonstration by Kim Teoh on its filming capabilities and even without a gimbal or any stabilizing hardware, the video was incredibly smooth. I tried it for myself and its anti shake really helps with the jerky movements most phones and even cameras tend to produce.

The current model has Beautify 4.0 which will give you your perfect skin. Fairer or rosier, all at the tap of a finger. The front facing camera is a f/2 16MP. I took a few shots with the wide angle lens I found in their door gift bag but the images came out kinda blurry and unfortunately, I don't have a picture without the lens so I can't show you how amazing it really is but here are a few more shots from the demo set they lent us for the event.

This is actually a great phone for your parents because they can clone phones. As in you can transfer everything from the old phone to the new by just syncing the two. And if what really gets you going it knowing how fast it is: charging for just 5 mins gives you 2 hours talk time, 0.06 seconds to take a picture and 0.2 seconds to unlock your phone with fingerprint verification.

Oh! You can also set each fingerprint for a different app. So thumb for instagram, index for spotify? No problemo. If you want this phone, you should head over to their website and preorder it right now and you might get to meet Minchen at Vivacity Megamall tomorrow!

vid: When You Get On Spotify Premium

Had to delay posting this video because the whole of Sarawak went into mourning. I'm not going to pretend I feel affected but I wanna show my respects and give a moment of silence to whom I know as "one of the good guys".

So, subscribe if you haven't already. I'm going to try and get at least one video out every week. Shocking, to me, yes. I'm the queen of broken promises and princess to fleeting interest (三分钟热度公主) but one vid a week shouldn't be all that hard. So that's about 52 videos. 2 down, 50 to go.

Review: Sando Ramen (Premiere 101, Kuching)

My favorite place to get a ramen fix!

The first time I had it was at ST3 and before that I was under the impression that ramen just doesn't agree with me. I wanted so much to love it because Naruto does. It might seem childish in your eyes, but man he really LOVED ramen and I wanted it to bring me the same happiness it brought him. It's just that, disappointingly, all other ramen I've had in dear old Kuching has always let me down, until I tried Sando.

Chashu Mayu Tonkotsu | RM21.20  - Cucumber Lemon | RM8.50
The milky pork broth infused with garlic hits just the right spot especially on a cold hungry night but today's pork, while tender, had an intense piggy smell. One I've grown weary of since days of Australia. I left them untouched while I finished the entire bowl of crunchy, slippery goodness. However, I must admit that they seemed to have been a bit too heavy handed with the MSG or something, because dinner left us murderously thirsty.

I would have loved to try their Gyoza but it was sold out so we had to settle for Japanese pizza!

Japanese Pizza | RM17.50
I asked for less mayonnaise on our pizza because hello there's 100 calories in each tablespoon! There was still a fair bit of the condiment though, so you can probably imagine how much they usually put! But the pizza itself has just the right amount of crispiness in every bite. I love it! I'm definitely going back for more but next time, I'll be ready with gallons of water. Why? Because it's worth it.
